Amelia is an Associate at BCL specialising in all areas of business crime, with a particular interest in representing individuals and companies against allegations of fraud, bribery and corruption. A dual-qualified English barrister and New York attorney, Amelia has practised on both sides of the Atlantic and is a significant asset in cases which touch both jurisdictions.

Since joining BCL, Amelia has been the lead associate in a team defending a client charged in a complex multi-handed overseas bribery prosecution brought by the SFO. Amelia is currently representing a suspect in an ongoing SFO overseas bribery investigation at interview.

In addition, Amelia has expanded her experience in business crime to include conducting internal investigations, handling cases concerning the proceeds of crime and defending individuals against threatened private prosecutions.

As well as her expertise in business crime and regulation, Amelia is a member of BCL’s data, privacy and cybersecurity team. She has a particular interest in the application of data and privacy laws in the education sector, including submitting DSARs to educational institutions, drafting responses to DSARs from students and/or parents, data breach response and children’s data rights.

Before she joined BCL, Amelia completed her pupillage and subsequently took tenancy at a highly ranked barristers’ chambers in London. At the independent bar, Amelia practised predominantly in all areas of criminal law, appearing in the Crown and Magistrates’ courts.

Amelia then spent three years working as a litigation associate at an AM100 law firm in New York City, where she gained broad experience in state and federal litigation, with an emphasis on commercial litigation, white-collar criminal defence litigation and investigations. While practising in New York, Amelia was the sole associate on a team defending an individual against a high-profile multi-million-dollar commercial bribery prosecution brought by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office. She also worked on several complex and document-heavy cases while in the United States (including responses to SEC production orders and large internal investigations). Amelia’s tenacity in grappling with substantive legal arguments is matched by her composed and logical approach to case management, making her a formidable asset to any team.

Amelia graduated with a BA in Classics from St Hilda’s College, University of Oxford and then completed her GDL and BPTC at the City Law School in London. She was called to the Bar in 2017. In 2020, Amelia attended the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, USA as a Thouron Award recipient and graduated with an LLM. She was admitted to the New York Bar in 2021. In 2022, Amelia’s prowess at legal writing was recognised at the United States Supreme Court, Washington D.C., where she was presented with the American Inns of Court Warren E.
